Horrifying as stories of torture and indefinite detention of detainees in the Global War On Things That Make Us Tense are they're all the sorts of things that happen to someone else. I'm sick and sorry and ashamed that people who on some level work for me have committed and are committing these crimes but not particularly worried that any circumstances could happen where I'd get waterboarded. This case feels different: Attorney General Woods has this to say about the Bush Justice Department's prosecution of [Ex-governor of Alabama again running for governor when prosecuted]Siegelman: 'I personally believe that what happened here is that they targeted Don Siegelman because they could not beat him fair and square. This was a Republican state and he was the one Democrat they could never get rid of.' In other words not being able to beat Siegelman at the polls Woods believes that his own party corruptly used the criminal justice process to take out an adversary. This is an extraordinary heavy accusation. Not something that a senior Republican would raise easily about his own party. And the facts back the accusation up beginning to end. Siegelman's in federal prison. For seven years. He was convicted of corruption on allegations that a businessman made a large donation to a charitable fund controlled by the state and in return was appointed to an unpaid position on the Alabama hospital oversight board. Based on testimony from a criminal who was pressured to testify in exchange for a lighter sentence who testified that Siegelman walked out of a particular meeting with a check for the donation. Documentary evidence contradicts that testimony the check wasn't cut untill well after the meeting. But the prosecution didn't provide that evidence to the defense or put it before the jury. This is crazy Siegelman is literally a political prisoner. He was convicted on trumped-up charges because he was a political threat to the Republican party. And unless it gets straightened out on appeal he's going to spend seven years in prison based on a case cobbled together out of no wrongdoing whatsoever by corrupt federal prosecutors working at Karl Rove's direction. This is an old story I've known about it for ages and I'm just posting about it now because of the 60 Minutes piece on it this week. I find it more personally frightening than waterboarding though. No one's likely to have me waterboarded. But if you or I or anyone you know turned into a significant political threat to Republican politicians we could get railroaded just like Siegelman the only thing that keeps us safe isn't that we're Americans or that we're middle class people who could get lawyers to defend us it's that we're not important enough to bother imprisoning. Does anyone know what the rules are about cleaning house in the Justice Department when a new administration comes in? The top level appointees turn over and are reappointed by the new administration but are we allowed to fire literally everyone who was appointed in the last eight years and start fresh?...

This week he's been mostly trip and outting-free meaning that he's sort of driving Trish and I crazy. But yesterday an eerie calm settled over him. He sat at his desk for literally hours typing away one carefully selected peck at a time. After working at his keyboard for a chunk of the day he printed out something and brought it in to me to read. It was the first draft of the first page.. really the first couple of paragraphs of a story called Commander Robo. The story from what I could tell was about a hamster jet fighter pilot who crashes in the rain and needs to find his way to safety amidst a ferocious hail storm. After he finished reading it to me I asked if I could have the print out you know to save for when he gets old. He said no. "I need to give it to my agent." WTF? I don't even have a damn agent. You read that right. It's a steam -powered battery charger. Yeah this is something we can picture everyone building on their own. Before you go and ridicule these people with emails they'll probably never read (because they're insane mountain people) the charger doesn't charge your standard AA batteries. It charges a 48V battery bank. You know to power their house. It's the same battery bank that they use solar arrays and wind turbines to charge when not using that steam engine. And it sure seems like one Orange County theater-goer had a small dose of the crazy when he (somewhat randomly) stabbed two people and he didn't even wait for the movie to end! According to "one man suffered a stab wound to the arm which punctured into his chest and was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange. The other man was also stabbed in the arm ... Both are expected to survive ... The attacker who is believed to have been kicked out of the theater earlier escaped." The story also involves a mysterious bag of "illegal substances " so let's not get all knee-jerk and blame the movie for the violence. Seems that the stabber got away but police are following up on a few leads. I was going to get in touch with one of the Signal -makers and ask them for a reaction but that seemed a little silly. Does anyone want people getting STABBED while their movie plays? I think not. | | |

There was a news release today about a study that appears to show the uselessness of popular antidepressants. This was among other places. The publication . There are problems as summarized: PlOS is not an academic peer-reviewed journal. edit: They are in fact peer-reviewed based on better information I have received by comments. Read the threads. They say they are peer-reviewed but when you you'll see this: 'We involve the academic community in our peer review process as much as possible. After professional staff have determined that the paper falls within the scope of the journal and is of a minimum acceptable quality decisions on whether to send a paper out for in-depth review are made via a collaboration between experienced professional editors who work full time at PLoS and academic editors who are experts in their field.' I'm not saying this is Wikipedia but it's not the same thing as a traditional journal either. It's one study. Beware of an equivalency between 'one metastudy showed that these three or four drugs didn't show a good outcome under these conditions' and 'antidepressants don't work.' The study measured outcomes at six weeks. That isn't very long in a depression treatment whether you're using Prozac or a trampoline. That having been said anything that keeps family doctors from throwing the best-advertised drug at every problem is going to be helpful at this juncture. And using any kind of medication (except possibly the trampoline) without counseling is well crazy.
